A glossary of terms and words that are scene related but explained in plain English. This is in no way a definitive list and if you have something to offer email Me at patcald@telus.net Age Play - A form of role play where the participants enjoy exploring the persona of a much younger (or sometimes older) person. Animal Play - A form of role play in which the participants take on the persona of an animal. Most common are puppies or ponies. BDSM - Accepted acronym for bondage, discipline, dominance, submission, sadism and masochism Bondage - the practice of using restraints i.e. rope, tape, cuffs, etc. Bottom - Used to refer to a person who prefers to be the recipient of BDSM activity Brat or Bratty sub - usually a submissive/bottom who enjoys rebelling against their dominant/top in a childlike way. Breath Control - Control of breathing by another person (usually the dominant partner) using hoods or masks. Body Modification - Usually includes piercing, tattoos, branding and cutting. Can include corsetry. Cane - A long thin flexible rod made from amongst other things, kuboo or rattan used to strike someone usually on the buttocks. Cat - Commonly used to mean a multi tailed flogger made from various materials such as latex, suede or leather. Clamps - Alligator clips and Japanese clover clamps are very popular devices to pinch or squeeze flesh. Clothes pegs are also ideal for this purpose. Cock and Ball Torture - Activity within SM by giving strong stimulation to the male genitals. Consensual - Term referring to any BDSM related activity carried out with the full knowledge, understanding and consent of all participants. Crop - Equestrian tool available in many different types. Crossdresser - A person who dresses in the clothing of the opposite gender. Cuffs - methods of restraint usually leather, metal or rope. Cutting - Term used to describe an SM activity whereby very shallow, decorative cuts are made in the skin, usually with a sterile scalpel. Daddy - A dominant (male or female) who has a submissive "boy" or "girl" and who relates to them in a parent/child mode. Degradation- to decline to a lower, destitute, or demoralized state ,to be reduced to a state of being lower than the Dominant Discipline - usually understood to mean the punishment or correction administered to a submissive. (The context and surrounding role play is a matter of personal choice) Dom/Dominant - one who like to be in control ( male). Domme/Domina/Dominatrix - One who likes to be in control (Female). D/s - abbreviated definition of dominance/submission, a style that doesn't always include elements of SM. Endorphins - natural peptides created by the body to help endure pain or stress. EPE - Erotic Power Exchange - polite term for BDSM FemDom - Female dominant Fetish - An item or thing abnormally stimulating or attracting sexual desire. Fisting - The art and practice of inserting the entire hand into the vagina or anus. Flagellation - the act or practice of striking another person (or oneself) as a sexual stimulus. Flogger - A multi-tailed whip usually made out of latex, suede or leather. Gag - object that is inserted into the mouth to restrict or muffle sound. Gender Play - To dress up or take on the persona of a person of the opposite sex. Golden Shower - Practice of one person urinating on another. Gorean - Taken from the "Gor" books by John Norman detailing slave culture Heavy - Sometimes used to describe an intense form of play. Humiliation - In-scene-context embarrassment or humbling of a person by teasing them about their sexual desires. Can also include carefully negotiated public play and style of dressing Infantilism - Role play involving infant-like behavior such as wearing nappies and infant style clothes, being bottle fed. Japanese Bondage - an art form practicing intricate rope bondage Latex - rubber like material used to make clothing, floggers and other fetish items. Leather - material very popular within the BDSM scene used in clothing, whips, floggers and restraints Leather Butt - Description applied to the condition of the skin after repeated whipping over a period of time. Limits - A predefined set of rules not to be exceeded agreed beforehand by participants when they engage in SM play Masochist - Person who enjoys receiving pain in an erotic way. Master - male who takes the dominant role in SM play. This title is bestowed in recognition of his skills or attributes. Unfortunately this same title can be self-awarded and abused by any wanna-be who wants to impress unwary subs (particularly prevalent in online communities). Mind - the most erogenous part of your body Mistress - A Female dominant - see description of Master Mummification - The practice of wrapping the bottom/sub so that they are immobile. Most common materials are cling film, bandages or specialist body bags Munch - a gathering of people in a vanilla setting to meet up and socialize with like minded others. Negotiation - The discussion and agreement of determining the limits and boundaries of an SM scene or relationship Nipple play - erotic stimulation of the nipples Non-consensual - Anything that is done by one partner to another without their consent OTK/Over the Knee - usually referred to in a spanking context Ownership - having control of the submissive partner in a BDSM relationship Pain slut - slang term for masochist Pansexual - a group or organization who encompasses all gender and sexual orientations Play - to engage in SM activities Play punishment - punishment in an erotic way, usually beginning with a trivial misdemeanor as the excuse to begin the scene Rimming - Common term for anal-oral sex Role Play - Creating a scenario and/or persona to explore the sexual fantasies of the participants Sadism/Sadist - Deriving sexual pleasure from the giving of pain and related activities such as humiliation and/or domination. Sadomasochism/SM - Sexual practices incorporating the consensual use of humiliation, dominance and/or pain for erotic pleasure Safe call - An arrangement with a friend when meeting a potential partner for the first time. Usually includes a phone call in or out at a prearranged time with various code phrases to denote levels of safety. Safe, Sane and Consensual - Phrase used throughout the SM community to denote adherence to a "code of conduct" Safe Sex - the practice of sex where no body fluids are exchanged. Includes the use of condoms on toys such as vibrators and butt plugs and dental dams when having oral sex Safe word - A specific word or phrase agreed between the participants of the scene to indicate that endurance levels have been reached (see traffic lights item) Scat - feces/shit Scene - term used to refer to the SM community or an individual play session Sensory Deprivation - restricting the use of the sub/bottoms senses during an SM scene using blindfolds, earplugs etc Slave - person who has an ongoing, committed relation with a dominant. Slave contract - written agreement defining a committed SM relationship Smart Assed Masochist - person who challenges or annoys to gain punishment Switch - person who switches roles and enjoys being a top/dom or a sub/bottom Straight - used in context to refer to heterosexuals Submissive - one who gives up control to another Sub space - a delicious feeling of endorphin induced haze - emotionally, a very nice place to go Top - one who assumes control usually temporarily within a scene Topping from the bottom - when a bottom/sub is trying to control the scene while in the non-controlling role Top space - a dominant attitude Toys - collective slang term for the accoutrements and paraphernalia of SM such as floggers, canes and crops Traffic Lights - accepted form of safe word during a scene. Red - stop the scene immediately, Amber - lighten up, I'm almost at the limits of endurance, Green - I love this, please don't stop!
